Faculty
GSOA faculty members are required to hold 4 year college degrees, or the equivalent professional experience. Many faculty members hold advanced degrees in their fields. As a partner with Gaston County Schools, GSOA requires background checks on faculty members. GSOA employs between 17-22 part-time faculty members each year.

1. Instrumental: Individual lessons for young people and adults in banjo, cello, guitar, mandolin, percussion, piano, violin, woodwinds (clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone). Age requirements: Each faculty member has his or her own age requirements, but in general, 1st grade or 2nd grade is the youngest most instructors take students for individual lessons. A beginning music and piano course, Music for Little Mozarts, is appropriate for 4 and 5 year olds.
2. Voice: Individual lessons for young people and adults. Age requirements: Most GSOA voice instructors begin individual lessons at approximately 10-11 years of age after an assessment for readiness of the student's vocal chords. A GSOA chorus program has been started for younger children, and GSOA's Taste of the Arts program teaches music, singing, drama and art to children 3-9 years old.
3. Drama: GSOA has drama classes with limited class-size enrollment on weekdays for young people throughout the school year, and group drama camps for young people during the summer. Young people may also audition for GSOA Playhouse's productions during the school year and the summer stage series. Age requirements: usually 2nd grade and up. A program for younger students, A Taste of the Arts, teaches children drama, music and art in age-appropriate curriculums for ages 3-9 years.
4. Youth Art: GSOA has art classes for ages kindergarten through high school each afternoon during the school year and week-long art camps for young people during the summer months. High school students may also take adult art classes, which are held at night during the school year, and during the day and at night during the summer.
5. Adult Art: GSOA has adult oil & acrylics, watercolor, drawing and pottery classes scheduled throughout the year. At various times during the year, GSOA also offers adult workshops in house portraits, watercolor pencil, heraldry and drawing.
